Accelerated Mineral Quench Oil
Petro Quench Oil is a premier quality accelerated quench oil specifically developed for the specialist heat treatment of carbon or low or low alloy steels. It is a blend of highly refined parafinic base oils supplemented by a comprehensive additive system. This combination imparts superior thermal and oxidation stability, inhibits the formation of sludges and improves the rate of quench. Being of low viscosity and having excellent vocality characteristic, Petro Quench Oil gives a very tast quench whilst preserving all of the the advantages of oil.
Benefits
Excellent oxidation and thermal stability which cintributes to long oil life in service.
Low vocality ensuring low oil consumption though vocatilisation.
High boiling range providing an optimum vapour blanket stage and fast quench rate.
Good water shedding properties allowing fast removal of contaminant water.
Good interstage corrosion inhibition protecting the workpieces.
Petro Quench Oil is particularly recommended for the accelerated quenching of low alloy or carbon steels where it is desirable to product shallow surface hardening. The degree would be dependent upon the requirement and the configuration of the component.
Being of low viscosity it is particularly applicable to batch heat treatment where drag out losses need to be minimized.
Weight Loss and Viscosity increse
As a result of the careful selection of base oils and additives system, the weight loss and viscosity increase as measured after 28 days at 100ºC was minimal. This evaluation demonstrated the low vocality characteristics, excellent thermal and oxidation stability of Petro Quench Oil. The performance was superior to that of a straight dumbbell blended oil of similar viscosity.
Maintenance of the Oil
For satisfactory service, the quench tank oil should be maintained at a working temperature of between 50ºC to 70ºC and the quantity of scale and sludge carefully controlled. Solid matter agitated with the oil is liable to adhere to the workpieces, retard heat transfer and increase the risk of soft spots, distortion and cracking. It also has a pro-oxidant effect on the oil. Circulating systems should always be fitted with fine metalic strainers capable of removing the majority of solid particles. Regular oil analysis is recommended as a method of preventative maintenance and can provide an early indication of oil deterioration.
Water
Quench oils often contain traces of water, sometimes from cooling equipment leakage and often from condensation. Amounts of say below 0.1% by weight are not encommon and can can be tolerated. With quantities of free water however, there is a real danger of cracking workpieces and if steam is formed during quenchinn, violent foaming may occur. Every effort should therefore be made ti minimize if not completely eliminate water ingress into the quenching oil system from whatever source.
Health and Safety
Petro Quench Oil is inlikely to pose any toxic hazard when used in the recommended applications, provided good standard of personal and industrial hygiene are observed.
